She was brought up in California.

Her father worked with the United States Army in the past. Later, he went on to be recruited by KJLH (102.3 FM) as an electronics engineer.

Leslie had already reached 6 feet tall when she was in high school. Seeing her tall height, Leslie’s father encouraged her to play basketball. After that, she enrolled at Chapman University on a basketball scholarship and later went on to play basketball at Colorado State University too. However, she was not sure about whether she wanted to continue to play basketball during her adulthood.

In 1987, Leslie found her passion for stand-up comedy in college.
